All The People

Starving Artists Group Art Expo Commercial
1980s

All The People is an ongoing project consisting of large commissioned paintings of my friends and loved ones. As a kid I recall watching Saturday afternoon movies on TV. The airtime was cheaper so a majority of the commercials aired during the breaks were from local Columbus, Ohio businesses like Larmco Windows, Conns Potato Chips, and whatever was going down at the fairgrounds. Several times a year an art expo would come to town. Their commercial would announce in bold blinking letters: Sunday! Sunday! Sunday at the Fairgrounds! Art Expo! Starving Artists Prices! The camera would pan through row upon row of paintings of nature scenes, barns, and deer gently drinking out of a creek. Calming imagery for the home or office. Functional. Think Bob Ross.

I’ve long been drawn to painted portraits that used to frequent the walls of banks… hospitals… libraries. You were someone if resources were spent to have a big painting of you made. They were tacky-cool, in the sorta way I find mid century wood paneled rooms cool… anti-cool.

The genesis of this project came from a photo that was sent to me of Emily Hanlon wearing a giant reindeer mascot head. I found the image hilarious, odd, and beautiful. I realized I had many other photos of people around me wearing masks, costumes, and appearing in similar striking scenes. I started calling these photos painting worthy. Soon I found myself commissioning large portraits, big enough, no, grand enough to proudly display over a mantle of important individuals in my life. Finally… a way to collect people!

As the collection grows it has become apparent that the paintings are as much a document of me as they are my subjects. These are the people in my life and how I see them: my own National Portrait Gallery.
